Haute Route

The Haute route is a famous 180 km long ski touring and hiking route in the stunning Alps. In its classic form, it goes from Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland, but many variations are possible!

We will begin our trip in Chamonix, France, about 50km southeast of Geneva. During this excursion we will traverse long stretches of glaciers and valleys that carve through endless giant mountains.

Our USP for this trip is that we split the route into 2 trips, totalling 3 days per trip. This means that those who would struggle to complete it in one can still experience the magic of this route. Alternatively you can attempt the whole route in one push over 6 days, the choice is yours.

How long?

On average we ski roughly,  4-6 hours per day. Our accommodation will be alpine huts that are strategically located along the path and that fully cater to your needs.
On the first day, we will meet at your chosen location and organise all the equipment. Then we will ski in the resort to settle in, get to know each other and discuss the route.

On the second day we begin the ski tour and head towards our first hut. The terrains we will be passing through are some of the most stunning landscapes in the world and there will be endless epic views!

On the third day, setting off from the hut, we will continue touring and begin our descent towards Zermatt, Arolla or Champex.

The beauty of this trip is our ability to chop and construct our own customised route. This trip requires that you have a high level of fitness (see fitness levels). You also need to be a skilled off piste skier. We can break the trip down in to ‘bite sized’ pieces. Meaning we can pick up where you left off, or stop and come back to that point the next time you return.

Prices quoted are per person per day, and include Guiding fee only.

Heli-Skiing

Probably the first places that spring to mind when you think about Heli-skiing are Canada and Alaska.  But think again, as the Alps have some awesome Heli-skiing areas, and are much closer to hand. While most ski lifts start to close in most resorts around April, heli-ski operators still continue to run throughout April. So don’t give up on the idea thinking April is too late…

Tell me more

Why Heli-skiing?

Below are a few of the main reasons why Heli-skiing is unique and preferred by some.  First of all, heli-skiing isn’t for everyone. It requires a good level of, off piste skiing experience, (we can help with this too) as well as a good level of fitness. That said it’s a cool way to get high into the mountains quickly, and has additional benefits such as:

  • Firstly you can escape the crowds. Unlike the tracked-out runs of any ski resort, you create the first tracks! No racing and elbowing to get their first after a fresh dump of snow, this is your run.
  • You can experience uninterrupted long runs. Imagine being able to ski for an hour or three without having to get on a lift?!
  • Varied terrain whilst heli-skiing is a bonus, as it will challenge and push you, testing your ability whilst your skiing experience improves.
  • Europe heli-skiing means that it’s more achievable over a long weekend, rather than taking a weeklong break elsewhere.
  • You can get more done. Normally European heli-skiing involves 2/3 drops in a day. This means that it’s possible to heli-ski and resort ski in the same weekend, if not the same day!

For further details, and more information on your heli-skiing experience, get in touch.

Mountaineering – Matterhorn

This has to be one of, if not thee most iconic mountains in the Alps. If you had to draw a mountain then this is possibly what you’d come up with.
A real mountaineering challenge awaits when you set your sights on climbing this mountain.

First climbed by Edward Whymper in 1865, using old school and by today’s standards primitive Climbing equipment, he climbed the mountain by what is now regarded as ‘the classic way up’ – the Hornli ridge.
The ridge has been climbed by 1,000’s of people over the years, but this route demands respect and one not to be underestimated by any party.

Our Matterhorn course

Having 6 days allows the time for practice, acclimatisation, and gives us a weather window. The first couple of days will be spent with your mountain guide practising the skills needed to climb the Matterhorn. It’s a good chance to get to know one another, as well as practicing moving quickly and efficiently over rocky and icy terrain.

Skills & Duration

Rock climbing skills and crampon work over mixed terrain will all be needed when climbing this peak. A high level of fitness (fitness levels) is needed to climb the Matterhorn, and a confident approach helps. Rock n Ridge can help with training days to get you fit and ready for this peak, as well as advise on training programs. Remember your only 50% there when reaching the summit. And what you’ve climbed up, must be back climb down to the Hornli hut.

On the first 2 days you’ll climb smaller peaks and climbs which have similar terrain to the Matterhorn. Some examples include: the traverse of the Aiguille d’Entreves and the Tour Ronde 3,792m can be used. These routes will be climbed from the Torino hut, which is a very comfortable and fully equipped mountain hut.

The next 2 days will be split between walking to the Hornli hut and the actual climb itself. We book in for 2 nights in the hut, this gives us chance if the weather doesn’t play ball. Day 5 and 6 is either climbing the Matterhorn. You can choose to go back out and climb something classic, or if you prefer kick back and bask in the feeling that you’ve climbed the Matterhorn.

Mountaineering – Gran Paradiso 3 day mountain trip

A classic, and often used as a great acclimatisation peak, Gran Paradiso is Italy’s highest summit. Standing at 4,061m it’s the only mountain more than 4,000m that has a summit that is entirely in Italy.

Tell me more

Although technically pretty easy to climb, Gran Paradiso doesn’t have a lift system to carry you part way up the mountain. This peak has a long walk in and out before you can tick it off your list.

We use day one as an acclimatisation day, as well as a walk in to either the refugio Chabod (2 hours) or refugio (2.5 hours) Vittorio Emmanuel. Both are around the 50E mark and offers half board with ample food and drink and a warm atmosphere. The day will also look at glacial travel, ice axe and crampon skills and alpine scrambling technique.

Day 2 – After a good feed and a comfortable nights rest we’ll set off early heading for the summit of Gran Paradiso. The route is mainly glacial that ends with about 20/30 minutes of roughly grade 3 (UK) scrambling. All of which will be led and protected by your IFMGA mountain Guide. So rest assured you’ll be in more than capable hands.

Depending on fitness levels, your ambitions and of course the weather, we can summit and then back down to the hut for another night. Or likewise we can take the long walk back down to the valley to then do something the next day. So day 3 will either be the walk out from the hut, or spent maybe Rock Climbing in the valley. Alternatively you could just relax and recoup, the choice is yours.

Snowshoeing & Alpine skills

Snowshoeing is a forgotten activity that once done, you’ll want to do it more and more. It’s tremendous fun and allows you to access places that unless you had skis, you couldn’t get to.

Snow shoes work by distributing your weight across a larger area of the snow so that your foot does not sink. The traditional snowshoes had a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings.

Tell me more

Here are some of the benefits of snowshoeing:

  • Access – Access places that are off the beaten track and away from tourist tracks. Also their more accessible than skis especially through tree terrain and low-snow conditions.
  • Ease – You don’t need to have had experience to do it. If you’re new to it better still! As you won’t have bad habits.
  • Cheap –  A set to buy, could cost you as little as £40/60, and can be hired.
  • Great fitness – Offers low impact, aerobic exercise. Great for staying in shape, all round fitness and keeping the weight off.
  • Versatile – Go on the terrain that suits your ability. Easy – hard trails.

Why not give it a try, we know you’ll love it. Our packages – anything up to 7 days, offers snowshoeing and Alpine skills combined. Therefore you cover a lot of ground (no pun intended…) as we look at Alpine techniques whilst out and about. This could range from navigation skills, to ice axe and crampon work, ice axe arresting, glacial travel and terrain interpretation. Of course we will be giving you information on the local landscape, and flaura and fauna along the way.
